Tasman Peninsula

A 75-minute drive east of Hobart, the Tasman Peninsula has two distinct sides.

The uniquely shaped landscape is a treasure trove for nature lovers. You can enjoy many of its geological highlights, like the Tessellated Pavement and the Tasman Arch, through roadside lookouts. Others — in particular the three legendary capes, Hauy, Raoul and Pillar, soaring high above the ocean — call for more time and proper hiking shoes.

Then there’s history to explore, too, and it’s sobering. The big-ticket item is the World Heritage-listed penal site of Port Arthur, which was in operation during the mid-1800s. Because of its brutal practices, this place used to be called “Hell on Earth”, despite its undeniably stunning location.
