Perth

The capital of Western Australia, Perth stands out as one of the planet’s most isolated cities. It’s a hefty 2,100 km to the nearest big city, Adelaide. And, in fact, Indonesia is closer than Sydney. While that mind-boggling isolation is part of the appeal, what really makes a visit worthwhile are the diverse experiences — which are made even better by the famously blue skies (we’re talking Australia’s sunniest capital).

Old Town, also known as Fremantle, is the place to explore the city’s sometimes dark but no less fascinating early days. Beneath the slopes of Kings Park, the modern Central Business District, fronted by the Elizabeth Quay precinct, offers top-notch accommodation and dining. If you want to feel sand under your feet, iconic Cottesloe Beach and Scarborough Beach have you covered.

There’s no shortage of things to do a bit further afield either. A boat trip takes visitors to Rottnest Island, with ever-smiling quokkas and countless turquoise bays. Travel south to find Margaret River, which combines acclaimed wineries and secluded beaches. Or, with more time on hand, set out on a road trip north towards the remote Shark Bay and the Ningaloo Reef.
