When it comes to beaches, the Sunshine Coast has an embarrassment of riches. Yet, even among the region’s many options, Noosa Main Beach stands a little higher than the rest.

The lure of Noosa Main Beach
Sandwiched between the verdant Noosa headland and the mouth of the Noosa River, the bone-white Noosa Main Beach presents a stunning scene for catching some rays. The feather in the cap is that the shore faces north, meaning the fringing blue water and faint breeze evoke a gentle Mediterranean Sea more than the notoriously fierce Pacific Ocean.
Those who want the calmest water should settle in directly under the height of the headland, where Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club has its base. To beat the crowds, spread your towel further west, though be cautious of the stronger waves and currents, particularly from the rock groyne that splits the beach into two and beyond.
Thanks to the sheltered setting, Noosa Main Beach is one of Australia’s best spots to learn surfing. You’ll find surfboards for rent both on the beach (look for the trailer with the HIRE sign) and nearby Hastings Street. If you prefer hiking, put on your shoes and follow the coast east for 15 minutes, past Little Cove Beach and countless pandanus trees, to reach Noosa National Park.
Grabbing a meal
You don’t need to leave the beach to refuel. Sit down for a meal (or drink) on the balcony overlooking the sand at the easygoing Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, with a menu featuring plenty of seafood options — plus salads, burgers and more.
Arriving by car
Finding a place to park near Noosa Main Beach can be a headache, especially on weekends and holidays. Your best bet is Noosa Spit Recreation Reserve, providing numerous beach parking lots within a 15-minute walk of the surf club.
Staying near the beach
There are several places to stay on Hastings Street, which runs parallel to Noosa Main Beach. Consider Sofitel Noosa for 5-star luxury, or zoom out just a little bit to stretch your budget considerably.
