Your experience
You’ll be dazzled by the magnificent white sand and even prettier water of the aptly named Turquoise Bay. Its north-facing Bay Side is a paradise for people who prefer to soak up the setting, sunbake and splash in protected conditions. The most remarkable snorkelling, however, happens on the west-facing Drift Side. Just walk along the beach for a few minutes, enter the water and swim out some 50 metres to reach the reef. Then, hitchhike with the current over the marine wonderland, keeping an eye out for the over 500 fish species. Possible sightings include everything from colourful parrotfish, wrasses and butterflyfish to gracious manta rays and reef sharks — plus other eye-catching creatures like turtles and octopuses. Exit the water well before reaching the sandy tip separating the bay from the drift as stronger currents occur beyond. Repeat!
Getting here
It’s a 62-km, 45-minute drive from the closest town, Exmouth. There’s one loop with parking spaces for the Bay Side and another for the Drift Side. Parking is free, but entering Cape Range National Park requires a fee.
Hotels near Turquoise Bay
Exmouth boasts a variety of lodging options. If you want to sleep within Cape Range, opt for the luxurious glamping experience at Sal Salis (5 min from Turquoise Bay) or settle with basic camping.
Our advice
Because the closest food outlets are in Exmouth, be sure to bring a hearty picnic. While you’re in the area, also explore other Cape Range highlights. We especially think Yardie Creek is an exceptional contrast to the reef.
