At first glance, Hobart can appear terrifyingly cold (at least by Aussie standards). But when you look closer, you see that Hobart, actually, offers what could be the country’s comfiest summers and an unparalleled winter backdrop.

December–February

Everybody and their dog seem to agree that summer is the best time to visit Hobart. The pros: Temperatures in the low 20s and a destination in full swing. In particular, the waterfront lets loose during the finish of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, coinciding with the New Year’s celebrations. The cons: Intimidating rates on flights and accommodation, plus busy attractions. Our conclusion? Join the party or aim for February, or even March, for a reasonable compromise.

March–May

A blissful extension of summer, but without the crowds, March is a remarkable time for exploring the scenery around Hobart, with Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula easy day trip targets. When the weather changes to the cooler, the coziness factor makes up for it. Picture yourself curling up with a hot chocolate at Coal River Farm or a whisky flight at Lark Cellar Door while the wind howls outside. Head to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens for colourful autumn foliage involving blood-red Japanese maples.

June–August

Although Hobart’s streets are typically snow-free, simply lift your gaze to see Mount Wellington blanketed in beautiful white powder. Ascend into the winter landscape to find frosty overlooks and tracks that allow for hiking through the snow. However, remember that the eye-catching, yet no less harsh, alpine setting requires proper preparation, including warm layers and reliable shoes. Evenings are best spent back in the city by a roaring fire, maybe at the iconic Shipwright Arms Hotel in the historic suburb of Battery Point.

September–November

The wettest time of the year isn’t that wet in Australia’s second driest capital. Just in case, though, pack an umbrella and have some indoor activities in your back pocket (like the dutiful, central, free Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery), and you’re good to go. Bringing binoculars is also a sensible idea; humpback and southern right whales migrate through the region from May to December, sometimes even with sightings in the River Derwent.
